Should You Worry about the College Career and Readiness Standards (CCR)?

The other day someone asked me these three questions:

“What is the CCR?”

“How will it help my adult students?”

“Does it mean I need to change what and how I teach?”

I replied, “CCR is the College Career and Readiness Standards. The CCR will help your students in several ways, and yes, you might need to adjust what and how you teach—but it all depends on what you are currently doing.”

Then I elaborated by sharing the following: 

According to the U.S. Department of Education’s Office of Vocational and Adult Education (OVAE), “The integration of CCR standards into adult education programs is intended to provide all adult students with the opportunity to be prepared for postsecondary training without needing remediation.” 

Isnʻt that what we want for our students?

The college career and readiness standards bring academic rigor 

OVAE has raised the bar in adult education. The CCR promotes more academic rigor in adult math and ELA classes. In other words, it calls for a better quality of education for adult students. That sounds great, doesnʻt it?

I’ll share a summary of the math and ELA standards later on—after I finish reading the 142-page CCR document! But for now, let’s focus on the basics:

  1. The CRR is derived from the Common Core Standards (CCSS) but is adapted to focus on math and ELA skills that adult students need.
  2. It is not a set of required standards to follow, rather, itʻs a framework that adult education programs can follow to better and adjust their existing standards.
  3. The CCR was put together by representatives from a variety of learning sectors (adult education, community colleges, career and technical training, the military).

College career and readiness standards solve several  issues in adult education

In a nutshell, the CCR does the following:

1.   Helps solve two key issues:

  • Identifies English language arts content and skills that adult students need so they can do well in college, technical training, and in the job market
  • Identifies mathematics content and skills that will help students succeed in college, technical training, and in the job market

2. Standardizes adult education across the nation

3. Promotes the integration of college and career-ready standards in all adult-education  programs at all levels

4. Better connects adult students with college and the job market
